Z Corp’s 3D printers available to Hawaiian school students, the wealthy

by dpr on May.04, 2009, under Gadget

We’re eagerly awaiting the day when 3D printers achieve the same sort of ubiquity as their two dimensional brethren — we can only imagine the sweet office pranks that will become available once we can conjure tiny objects from our imaginations (via AutoCAD). It looks like the fine folks over at Hawaii’s State Department of Education have more civic-minded uses for the machine, however. As high school students from throughout the islands complete their 3D design projects they send the files to the education office in Honolulu, which manufactures physical models with a Z Corporation 3D printer and ships them back to the students, who can then review the model and refine their design. A machine like Z Corp’s ZPrinter 310 Plus (seen above) will run you a cool $19,900 before shipping, sales tax, and so forth, so it looks like all of you amateur CADsters out there might want to find a pen-pal in the Pineapple State if you want to make your ID dreams a reality. Either that or do it yourself. And make sure you send us the YouTube link when you do.

Sony OLED Walkman (NWZ-X1050) hands-on

by dpr on May.04, 2009, under Gadget

We got a chance to peek Sony’s succulent OLED Walkman way back at CES, but we’ve waited for what seems like forever to hold one in our supple paws without a booth attendant breathing down our neck. The model that arrived today on our doorstep is the 16GB NW-X1050 (or NWZ-X1050), which just launched in Japan last week. There’s still no telling when this beauty will hit the US, but we can already guess that it’ll cause some serious buzz when it does. We’ll just come right out and say it: this is the best looking display on any PMP that we’ve ever seen. If you’ll recall, Cowon’s S9 also shipped with an OLED panel, but we’ve got to give the edge to Sony here. Also of note, we were never fans of the dark granite border in the press shots, but it’s downright stunning in person. We’re going to be hosting up a video walkthrough of the menus and such just as soon as it uploads (sigh) as well as some more thorough impressions in the coming days. For now, however, feel free to peruse the gallery below.

DIY ShiftBrite coffeetable a beautiful, headache-inducing conversation piece

by dpr on May.04, 2009, under Gadget

Searching for the perfect coffeetable is a struggle we know well. DIYer macetech has sidestepped the whole “boring” furniture problem by installing 81 ShiftBrite LED modules into a 2×2 foot IKEA table which run a sine plasma into HSV/RGB conversion by way of an Arduino. Sure, it’s probably not something your grandmother would want in her living room — but your friends would undoubtedley be pretty jealous to see this thing hanging out in your place. Watch out for seizures, though. Video of the table in action after the break.

Tonium Pacemaker unboxing and hands-on

by dpr on May.04, 2009, under Gadget

So we just got one of the first Tonium Pacemaker portable DJ rigs to land in the States, and while we anticipate having plenty to say about this trick little device, we thought we’d quickly share some pics with you, since it’s seriously one of the best and most fun unboxings we’ve ever done. Each cable is individually packaged in tissue paper inside its own box, and the flaps all have different little fortunes printed on them, from “Your future is looking sound” to our personal favorite “Listen to your mother.” As for the Pacemaker itself, it’s been pretty fun to mess around with in the few minutes we’ve had, but we’ve got to get some more tracks loaded up before we can say anything meaningful. Stay tuned!

HyperMac external battery powers MacBooks for 32 hours

by dpr on May.04, 2009, under Gadget

Yep, Sanho’s Hypermac is a big clunky external battery pack. Sure, we’re intrigued by the idea of running a MacBook Pro for 32 hours straight, but we’d really rather hunt around for a power outlet than drop $500 on the 222Wh unit required to make that happen. On the other hand, we could definitely see splurging for the $150 car charger or the $200 60Wh model, but we’re crazy like that. Shipping later this month, we’re told.

Sketchy roadmap has T-Mobile G2 for summer, G1 v2 and Samsung Houdini for fall?

by dpr on May.04, 2009, under Gadget

Mysterious roadmaps chock-full of pretty pictures of fanciful handsets from the future have a tendency to appear every once in a while; on the surface, we have no particular reason to believe this one over any other, but we’d like to. According to TmoToday’s supposed leak, the HTC-sourced G2 / Magic is expected this summer — which seems like an incongruous statement considering that we’re now expecting it to launch as the myTouch 3G. That would have us believing that the doc is either fake or out of date, and if it’s the latter, that makes the other two scoops here still relevant and interesting: first up, a second version of the G1 is said to be launching in the fall (looking a heck of a lot like an Ocean 2, if you ask us). Next, we’re seeing a Samsung “Houdini” in the same time frame that could definitely represent the US launch of the AWS-enabled i7500 — especially since we’ve been expecting a Sammy Android set on T-Mobile anyhow. Whether this is all real or dead fake, it’s definitely plausible, and we’re figuring it probably comes pretty close to representing the carrier’s Android plans for ‘09. Bring it on, guys.
